Before reading

After the second world war Germany was divided into four occupations zones and Berlin was surrounded by the Soviet zone. In June 1948 the Soviets blockaded all road/rail links to the city and 2 million people were in danger of starving. The western powers organised an air lift that lasted for 11 months. This marked the beginning of the cold war.
