This document provides an index to what will eventually be a wide range of logic and mathematical problems which concentrate on the ability of the student to abstract the necessary logic or mathematical equations and formulae from the (possibly simplified) real world situations in which they are set. They are intended to act as tests (even examinations) to challenge a student at some appropriate point in their study of basic numeracy and of mathematics generally.
Introduction
The exercises which are - or will eventually appear - in links below will range in difficulty from roughly NCEA level one to level five, where level one is normal high school entry and level five is university level. When this section is developed further it is expected that most of the exercises will be in the lower levels.
The exercises are provided in sets of about 20 problems per document as PDF files to be printed and solved on separate sheets. There are NO standard answers, since it is rather the method than the answer at the end which is the objective of having students do this kind of problem exercise.
The concentration here is on finding a suitable method to solve the problems given rather than on any mathematical complexity of the necessary calculations - although the higher level problems are, of course, not exactly simple.
Level One
The exercises at this level are aimed at high school entry level of mathematical knowledge.
- THERE ARE NO EXERCISES AT THIS LEVEL YET
Level Two
This group of exercises is aimed at students who have approximately third form mathematical ability.
- THERE ARE NO EXERCISES AT THIS LEVEL YET
Level Three
These exercises should be readily solved by students who have completed fifth form high school work successfully.
- Trigonometry - Triangles A set of questions aimed at testing the ability of students to see the mathematics behind some 'real world' situations involving single triangles.
Level Four
The kinds of problems set in the exercises in this section should be expected to equate roughly to high school scholarship exam level or a little below.
- Volumes and Areas A few examples aimed at testing the ability to think in two and three dimensions - only involving simple calculations, however!.
Level Five
This level is about exercises leading to an intermediate certificate before beginning an honours degree course at university or technical college.
