Swan Lake
If you want to persuade your partner/mother/child that ballet is not a boring night out with dusty old ladies in fur coats, suspicious men in tights and an unfathomable storyline - this production of Swan Lake is it.
Even with an eye for a good man in tights, there's no denying that Swan Lake is beautiful. Polished performances, majestic sets and magnificent costumes combine for a visual feats that didn't demand a lot of the audience. All we had to do was sit back and absorb it - getting a thrill at interval when darting into the programme revealed we had understood the story without even trying.
It would be hard not to fall under the spell of Russell Kerr's choreography. I'm no expert, but I couldn't help but get the feeling that his Swan Lake is just different somehow - the fluttering of swans' wings echo hauntingly, maidens' heads move coquettishly and the jester jumps up and down like a jack-in-the-box.
Of course there's also no beating a real live married couple performing some of classical ballet's most romantic pas de deaux. Gaylene Cummerfield is simply breathtaking as both Odette and Odile - a combination of mesmorising arms and frame-by-frame precision on her pointes. Her partner, Matthew Lawrence, is quietly steady throughout until he reaches the final act and we see his strength and sense of timing at its best.
After disappointment with the corps numbers in Giselle, Swan Lake gave me a new appreciation for their formation work and the sense of atmosphere they create. From my elevated position in a circle seat I got a completely new perspective, particularly during the lake scenes in act two. And I wasn't the only person in those seats who commented on the bird's-eye effect.
Falling somewhere between experienced dance enthusiast and one of the many who have hazy recollections of practising at the bar with 10 other snotty-nosed five year olds, I have rediscovered my love of classical ballet.
