Eggner Trio Concert
A fantastic musical feast was presented on Wednesday last in the Regent on Broadway. The Eggner Trio returned to treat listeners with a concert of shear delight. Beethoven opened the programme - Piano Trio in E flat. Although during this time in his life Beethoven was experiencing hearing loss, this composition is full of joyous melody, a little humour and the need for brilliant performers - and the Eggner Trio was the magical executer required. A wonderful performance which the audience appreciated.
How exciting to have John Psathas music Island Songs played. The three songs have distinct dance rhythms, very energetic piano ostinati (well almost), which drove the the musicians to play with great speed in song one. A slower second song gave the audience time to breathe again, before being swept along into the final lively and energetic piece. Such flawless playing is so pleasurable - the audience lived each note with the performers.
No wonder Brahms was so impressed by Trio in D minor composed by Alexander Zemlinsky. Its lush romanticism, and sweeping melodies were reminiscent of Brahms. As throughout the concert, the playing was the finest I have heard for some time. The first Allegro with its two contrasting themes, swept along with energetic rhythms and shifting harmonies. The Andante was introduced by a piano prelude so clear and tender and memorable, this was in great contrast to the final Allegro with its bright and fast tempo.
Then a real treat, an encore - a short morceau from Schumann.
Thank you Chamber Music New Zealand for engaging this trio. Three brothers - so much a perfect combination.
