Disasters & Emergencies

Last week's tornadoes in Taranaki and the bad weather up north this week are timely reminders we never know when a disaster is about to occur and therefore we need to be prepared at any time. Violent weather has been common in recent years, although we often think earthquakes will be the disaster to prepare for. Those affected by storms will tell us differently.

For some the damage to houses has meant that they've had to move out temporarily. Often neighbours have taken them in, which means the affected homeowners can keep an eye on their property and catch visiting emergency services personal. It is times like this that neighbours prove to be such a valuable asset. That's when a Neighbourhood Support network really pays, before the event - whatever it may turn out to be. Last week the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management posted out an excellent household emergency checklist. On the back is a household emergency planner.
