Kenyan orphanage visit

Zoe xxx is gearing up to make a life long dream come true.

She will leave Palmerston North at the end of July to spend two and a half months at an orphanage in Western Kenya.

"I can't remember a time when I didn't want to go to Kenya and help people. I've wanted to do it for ages," she says.

The one thing that has stopped Zoe from turning her dream into a reality was the fact that most charities offering the chance expected participants to pay to do it.

"I saw an article on a person who had done one and got a website from the article." From this website she found another and found that she could undertake a volunteer programme through Able Volunteers International Fund at no cost other than her flights and personal expenses.

Zoe will take part in a four-week summer programme aimed at people from the United Kingdom during their summer holidays.

"We go there and look after the orphans for those four weeks so they don't feel left out while on their summer break." She says they will be involved in teaching the children English, arts, sports, life skills as well as general mentoring.

"I think just spending time with them is a big thing. There are 35 odd kids and about two people to look after them."

Zoe is currently looking seeking donations of materials to take with her.

"Emirates have given m e some extra luggage so I can take stuff with me."

She is looking for general art and craft supplies, sewing materials and games for the kids to play with.

She is also offering local schools the opportunity to setup a pen pal scheme where children write letters and send photos and enough money (approx $2) for the kids at the orphanage to write back to them.

After the four-week summer programme is completed Zoe will stay on at the orphanage to help with gardening, planting and general work.

"I will also be involved with teaching the community about the use of solar cookers, helping with dental hygiene, glyconutrient distribution and measures for preventing Malaria."

She says this will include introducing them to mosquito nets and ways to prevent Malaria as well as teaching them how to use solar cookers.

"So many people are malnourished so we will have nutrition packs to give out and we will teach them about dental hygiene. There are free clinics providing them with care so we will make them aware that it is important to go and use them."
