Kindergarten learning

Innovative learning gives children the best possible start.

The Kindergarten Association is aware of the benefits it offers children and their families and it wants others to know just how good the organisation is through its awareness week celebrations.

We have been a leader in our field for more than 50 years and we are now nurturing a third generation of children readying them for the next step in their educational life, school.

The Kindergarten association has the perfect facilities for three and four year olds with some of the kindergartens also taking younger children.

Many of our kindergartens are situated next door to primary schools which enables the children to make an easy transition from kindergarten to school.

Traditionally our Kindergartens have provided 5 morning sessions a week for the older children and 3 afternoon sessions for the younger children.

As we move to meet the needs of our kindergarten communities there have been changes in hours and lengths of sessions.

This year seven kindergartens throughout the Association area will be offering School Day hours (6 hour sessions) and another two also have All Day Licence allowing them to have longer morning sessions. The best way to look at individual kindergarten sessions is through our website.

While families of children live in urban areas may be spoilt for choice when it comes to early childhood education, the Kindergarten Association attempts to provide the same high-quality service to rural children and their families.

In one area this come in the format of a travelling Mobile Kindergarten which visits 8 venues on a weekly basis.

"20 hours free" has been a great innovation and has enabled our Association to offer a broader range of hours and improve the teacher child ratio with All Day Licences in nine kindergartens.

All the kindergartens share the same goals of providing high quality early childhood education that is both affordable and accessible to all.

While the Association understands that many parents work it encourages families to be involved with their child's education and development.

There are also opportunities for families to get more involved with the kindergarten through committees and the association's board.

Families are encouraged to be part of the learning process and are able to read their own child's individual portfolio to see what they are learning and add their own thoughts.

"We believe that each child learns differently, has different skills interests and prior learning that teachers build on in partnership with families", says our Professional Services Manager.

Children are encouraged to develop strong peer relationships with each other and a certain level of independence through their play. The children are able to develop ideas and interact positively with each other.

All the Kindergarten Association kindergartens receive regular Education Review Office checks and audits with extremely positive results. These audits can be viewed on the Association website which has links to the ERO web site.

The Association General Manager says that the Association is doing well with these reports and the association is always looking for ways to improve.

While the Kindergarten Association believes in learning through play for its kindergarten children, it has high expectations when it comes to the education of its teachers.

All teachers hold either teaching diplomas or degrees before they join the team and then go through the specialised two-year advice and guidance training provided by our Professional Service Managers, to gain Full Registration with the NZ Teacher's Council.

Kindergarten teachers now work to professional standards similar to teachers in other sectors and the Association teachers pride themselves on their professional attitude and constant desire to keep up to date with professional development, latest research and ideas.

With 75 full-time and many part-time staff members, the Kindergarten Association is well placed to deliver high-quality early childhood education in a safe nurturing environment that provides a strong foundation for each child's educational framework and future learning.
