Fortunately there is now a growing corpus of material intended for teachers and tutors in the adult literacy field - adult literacy as a first or 'second' language. The material linked to from this document has all been selected as being directed at adults rather than children.
Teach English as a Foreign Language
TEFL, as it is known throughout the world, is aimed at teaching English to non-native speakers. Once past the elementary level, however, where comprehension and vocabulary are to be taught and expanded, there is very little difference in the techniques used from teaching a native English speaker with limited vocabulary.
Complete lessons at both Intermediate and Advanced level are available either as text or as PDF files or as both over the internet. One of the diasadvantages is that these documents come along with the answers and are not too student friendly. It was decided to try to produce a more student friendly version for the one-to-one tuition which ALPN uses - as web documents with the answers to exercises separately available. The first two of the buttons below may be used to access these -
- Intermediate The Intermediate lessons are written as though a class or small group is the method of tuition. Adaptation to single student tuition is readily done in most cases.
- Advanced Advanced lessons make greater use of comprehension and understanding of English usage than do the intermediate lessons. The exercises are not trivial and the whole could be set as a homework exercise.
Comprehension
The theme of the next two buttons is, generally, 'comprehension'. The "Association" button leads to an index of articles written about the use of words in association with other words - in a relatively light-hearted style.
"One-stop" is the name given to a series of short articles from Macmillan Education about the use of English in business, teen-age and other contexts. These, too are light-hearted and amusing.
Links
The final button leads to an annotated index of web sites which provide suitable material for us in an ALPN tuition context. The index is by no means exhaustive but, in collecting it every effort has been made to be selective about adult education for native English speakers not using US English.
